A Police officer and two Al-Shabaab militants were on Sunday 14th June 2020 killed during a fierce fire fight at Warankara township, Lafey, Mandera county, in northeastern prefecture of Kenya.
Preliminary police reports indicate that, about 10 heavily armed terrorists raided a telecommunication mast at about 3am. A heavy gunfight ensued between the Islamist terrorists and police reservists manning the Safaricom BTS.
The terrorists hauled two rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) at the BTS resulting to a gun battle with the police reservists guarding the communications mast.
Unfortunately, one police reservist was hit by bullets during the battle to repulse the attackers. Two Al-Shabaab attackers were also killed.
Police reservists successfully managed to repulse the attack after an intense gun fight that lasted for about a half an hour. Security has seen been scaled-up and surveillance has been increased in the area to track the attackers believed to be hiding within Daua Duba hills within Lafey Sub-County of Mandera.
Lull has been witnessed in northeastern prefectures of Kenya in the recent past weeks, however, minimal movements of the Al-Shabaab militants have been reported in the areas in Mandera bordering Somalia.
