Tensions are high at the UN-African Union mission to Darfur (UNAMID) after unidentified gunmen attacked peacekeepers at Kass near the Capital of South Darfur state. The attacked left 4 attackers dead and at least 6 peacekeepers wounded.
Attacks on the peacekeepers in Darfur have increased in the recent pas especially Khartoum wanting the UNAMID mission closed and the peacekeepers out of Sudan. The UN mission has however reacted and assured the safety of its staff and the decisive and vigorous response to such attacks on the peacekeepers in Darfur.
The UN officials have expressed discontent with how the Sudanese government is handling the attacks on the peacekeepers in Darfur with impunity and lack of prosecution. Concerns have been raised in the past with the way in which humanitarian workers and other volunteers are treated and perpetrators of crimes against them go scot free.
Peacekeepers in Darfur have experienced hostility from the locals especially rebels who wish UNAMID closed. The South Darfur state has been experiencing increased number of abductions, killings and carjacking especially of the Peacekeepers and other humanitarian staff which prompted the imposition of a state of emergency since July 2014.
Peacekeepers in Darfur have been in Sudan for over a decade now providing aid and helping maintain security in the rebel-struck Darfur region that resulted to the secession of the south region to form the youngest state in Africa, South Sudan.
