ISLAMABAD: Monday 7th September 2015, Pakistan military announced that it has developed locally made drones and has carried out first ever strike missile killing three high profile militants near the Afghan border.
Military spokesman Major-General Asim Bajwa through a brief statement said that the unmanned aircraft named Burraq attacked the terrorist compound in the volatile Shawal valley North Waziristan, a remote tribal district.
Large swathe of Waziristan region have provided militants linked to Pakistani Talibani with safe hideouts and also serve as perfect fugitive haven for commanders of the Taliban insurgency serving in the neighboring Afghanistan.
U.S. led coalition has also focused their drone campaigns in this region for nearly a decade in effort to eliminate the extremist bases from the Pakistani border region.
The goal of the raids is to defuse threat the militant pose to Afghan security forces and also to the coalition forces across the border.
Missile raids have killed hundreds of Islamist militants linked to Al Qaeda and Haqqani network of Afghan insurgents.
Though Pakistan has consistently opposed and condemned the unilateral CIA-run drone operation as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, the latest U.S. drone attack in North Waziristan about a week ago killed at least six local and foreign suspected militants.
