Intelligence chiefs across the region are attending an International Conference on the Great Lakes Region that kicks off on Tuesday 14th July, 2015 in Kampala Uganda. Other heads of intelligence in the region come from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Kenya is being represented by NIS Director General Philip Kameru.
The spies in the region are meeting to discuss measures to deal with terrorism that poses a great challenge to the East African region. Al Shabaab terrorists continue to carry out terror attacks to countries in the region with a special target on Kenya.
Pro-active measures that remain strictly intelligence will be put in place to tackle the new twist in terror, as Somali based Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen (HSM) advance strategies to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIL).
Top on the agenda of the meeting will be:
- Great Lakes shared threats where terrorism takes center stage.
- Intelligence gathering across the Great Lakes
