On Saturday, 27th October, a gunman stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 people in what is being called the deadliest attack ever on Jews in the United States. Authorities say, Robert Bowers, 46, stormed into the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in the affluent Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh shouting hate for Jews and killing worshipers in a 20-minute attack.
The anti-Semitic attack has inspired responses from different religious and cultural prefectures as they all show solidarity with the Jewish community affected by the heinous hate crime. Notably, Crowdfunding campaign Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue has raised more than $125,000 to help the shooting victims.
The donation page shares a message that has shown a different side of the Islam faith that has been under constant criticism in the past for fostering terrorism and violent extremism. The campaign is organized by the Muslim-American non-profits CelebrateMercy and MPower Change.
The united front fostered by the campaign has been able to rally thousands of people a move that echoes the sentiments of moderate Muslims who insist that the core values of Islam are not as purported by Jihadis but rather that of peace, love, and brotherhood. In the wake of such sad and dangerous times the campaign has been able to show the great parts of Islam and attempts to alter the narrative preached by terror groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS.
