Tensions are high in Burkina Faso’s capital after a group of militants mounted an attack close to the French Embassy and Burkinabe’s armed forces HQ. Eyewitnesses reported that an explosion was heard as at least five armed men open fired indiscriminately at people heading to the high-level security buildings.
Burkina Faso, like other countries in West Africa, has been targeted sporadically by extremist groups operating across Africa’s Sahel region.
The attack comes a week barely since the EU Pledge $500M For West Africa’s G-5 Sahel countries taskforce established to deal with extreme Islamist elements like ISIS and Al Qaeda in the region.
