M23 political spokesman, Lawrence Kanyuka has announced that the ceasefire announced by the EAC leaders does not affect the continued onslaught by the rebels. The rebels maintained that the ceasefire doesn’t concern them seeing as there was no representative from their side during the talks in Luanda.
M23 has called for direct dialogue with the Congolese government and until then the instructions to cease hostilities at 180HRS on 25th November did not concern them or guide their attacks.
Leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi, and Angola as well as Kenya’s former president Uhuru Kenyatta announced a ceasefire in the Eastern region of DRC. The ceasefire was announced following the conclusion of a summit in Luanda that was geared toward finding solutions for the ongoing crisis in Congo.
The ceasefire dictates that M23 rebels ought to withdraw from the occupied territories lest they face intervention from the regional forces. Kenya and Burundi have already deployed troops to DRC and Uganda is expected to also deploy at least 1000 troops before the end of the year.
