The spate of attacks witnessed in Lamu have been blamed on a local terror cell and local sympathizers leaking intelligence to Al-Shabaab terrorists. Lamu security officials have blamed locals selling out intelligence to the terrorists and subsequently abet terror activities.
According to Linda Boni boss, Joseph Kanyiri, the recent attack that left six KDF soldiers dead and five others with severe injures when their vehicle hit an IED at Kwa Omollo Bridge along the Bodhei-Bargoni road was as a result of a local Al-Shabaab network.
The terrorist local loyalists and sympathizers monitors movement of security agents and reports the same to the Al-Shabaab terror cell/network.
There are spies, reconnaissance parties, sympathizers, financiers and thriving resupply networks in Lamu, Kanyiri added. He rebuked the “see no evil report no evil” culture and those who refuse to share information on terrorists.
Citing the increasing trend of IED attacks in Lamu and the manner in which terrorists are operating, there is need to scrutinize some of returnees, as some may posing as returnees but could only be furnishing Al-Shabaab with actionable intelligence for attacks.
Also, it’s a call for locals to assist security officials to successfully eliminate Al-Shabaab terror cell operating in Lamu’s vast Boni forest enclave.
