The Kenya Ferry Services is in the process of modernizing the ferry services at the coast. Plans are underway to set up an express car service at the Likoni crossing that will link Mombasa Island with the mainland. The cable car will be used by travelers to and from Mombasa.
Likoni Cable Car Service project is set to reduce traffic jam, saving a lot of man hours, boost tourism in the South Coast as it will reduce delays by the ferries by a huge margin.
After its completion the cable car service will be able to ferry 11,000 passengers in an hour in both directions. The cable cars will be in themselves a tourist’s attraction as they will give commuters the priceless view of the Mombasa Island from 100 meters.
The project is estimated to cost USD41million an equivalent of 3.6 billion Kenyan shillings. The Cable car Service is sponsored by Trapos limited who have contracted Doppelmayr to provide and set up the equipment while the CFC Stanbic Bank will provide the funding.
The project initial set up that includes the towers, stations and connecting network cables along the route will break ground in September 2015 and is expected to be completed and commissioned by December 2016.
The Likoni Cable Car Service is part and pilot of the larger Mombasa Integrated Mass Transit Plan. The transit plan will reduce the commute time between Mombasa Island and the mainland.
Currently the commute time between Mombasa and the mainland is approximately 10 minute, with the introduction of the Likoni Cable Car Service will reduce that time to less than 3 minutes.
The Likoni Cable Car Service is a major step in line with Kenya’s vision 2030 of additional ferries and serves as an anchor to a Mombasa Aerial Cable Master plan that is expected to spread across the coastal region.
The Likoni Cable Car Service project embeds within a lot advantages for the locals as it will create jobs both during the construction and operational phases. It is also expected to bring development at Likoni area and overall contribute to the national GDP via taxes contribution.
Kenya is making milestones in being a trendsetter in the region and is well I line with the Vision 2030 goals. The Likoni Cable Car Service is set to put Kenya on the map and at the same create jobs, save on man hours, accelerate the economic growth in the coastal region and attract tourists generating income for the East African Country.

What will happen to the cable cars during the frequent power outages that are a normal occurrence across this county?
Likoni cable cars? Perhaps the dumbest idea by the county government yet! It still doesn’t address the current and ancient problem of cars crossing via ferry! A bridge is still and will always be the logical solution. The real question is why the Kenya Ferry Services have been opposed to this most common-sensical solution for decades. Until then, enjoy the circus with these clowns!
