Media reports indicate that Libyan pro-government forces engaged ISIS in a fierce fight and managed to rescue 14 civilians from the battle ground in the militant-held city of Sirte.
In a statement released by the pro-government forces, 14 civilians who included women and children were successfully rescued from the last part of the city where ISIS terrorists are currently holed up.
According to the statement, ISIS terrorists have been cornered in a single area of Sirte after months of long assault by forces allied with Libya’s UN-backed Government of National Unity (GNA).
Sirte lies 450 kilometers (280 miles) east of the capital Tripoli and a population of 120,000 before ISIS seized it in June 2015 and residents began to flee.
The battle of Sirte is challenging as U.S. airstrikes, pro-GNA forces are facing snipers, car bombs, suicide bombings and booby traps as they advance on the militants’ last holdout in Sirte.
