The Congolese military in collaboration with MONUSCO Intervention Brigade (FIB) launched CT operations against ISCAP in Irumu territory where they have announced the recapture of a key terrorists’ base. The forces announced that they had taken control of an ISCAP base in the Mont Oyo area located less than 20 kilometers from Komanda an area that has been used to launch attacks both in North Kivu and Ituri Provinces.
The Mont Oyo bases have been key since the deployment of Ugandan troops in DRC to fight the Islamic State insurgents and has been becoming larger with the growing number of terrorists and hostages alike ballooning by the day. It was used as a retreat region after the growing pressure from the troops in Beni. The terrorists retreated to the caves where they planned and executed deadly massacres against civilians.
According to military sources, the operation dubbed “OPS Komanda” was carried out by the two forces since April 16, 2022. The MONUSCO Intervention Brigade launched artillery strikes, followed by air strikes in support of the FARDC and UPDF.
The recaptured areas are the strongholds behind the caves of Mount Oyo, in the south of Irumu territory. It is from this region that these rebels are planning attacks against the civilian population. Thus, the dismantling of the bases is crucial in curtailing the violence that has since a spike especially since the beginning of the month of Ramadhan.
