Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tuesday 16th February 2016 announced the plans by the state to open a new prison to confine extremist offenders.
Speaking during the passing out parade for more than 2,300 prison warders at Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru, Kiambu County said a separate correctional facility will be opened to prevent extremist offenders from spreading their ‘ venom ideologues’ to venerable Kenyans.
President Kenyatta said the government remains committed at containing offenders in a rehabilitation facility so as to fit back into the society and make a positive contribution to their country.
The passing out parade was the first to be presided over by President Uhuru since he assumed office.
President Kenyatta also said that the government will look into budgetary allocation to the prisons service to meet the required changing operational and logistic standards.
The prison officers were commended for facing the prison challenges and engaging prisoners with education and vocational training programmes that speed up their reintegration to the community.
