Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta said Thursday 19th May 2016 that construction of security border wall along its border with Somalia will help deter terrorists from crossing over to the country.
Speaking in Mandera while on a three day tour of Northeastern Kenya region, President Kenyatta clarified that the 440-mile ( 700-kilometer) wall along Kenya-Somalia border is not meant to deter movements of people but to enhance security.
Kenya decided to construct security border wall along with its border with Somalia after a series of attacks claimed by the Somali based Al-Shabaab.
The wall once complete will have designated entry points manned by security forces. The wall also has a series of concrete barriers, fences, ditches and observation posts overlooked by CCTV stations, is expected to stretch from the Indian Ocean to Mandera, where both countries converge with Ethiopia.
Kenya security agencies have intensified border patrols to deter infiltration of the Al-Shabaab militants into the country while the country is faced by increased threats by the terrorists' network and homegrown terror cells after attacks in the northeast region
