Kenya’s proposed 2 billion U.S. dollars Lamu Coal Power plant that will be built by China Power Global will be the cleanest coal-fired power plant in Africa. The owners of the coal plant are a consortium consisting of Centum Investments, Gulf Energy, Sichuan Electric Power Design and Consulting, China Huadian and Sichuan No. 3 Power Construction.
The plant will use the cleanest coal technology with the plant operate at 43% efficiency which is 10-points higher than average on the global scale. This means that it will burn less coal to produce a unit of power as compared to conventional technology.
Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) plans to start construction of a high-voltage power line from proposed Lamu coal-fired plant in July. The 520-kilometer, 400-kilovolt (kV) line will cost an estimated $220 million (Sh22.28 billion) and take 36 months to complete.
The line is expected to evacuate 960 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the proposed 1,050MW coal-fired plant from Lamu to Nairobi through Kitui.
