Kenya is set to purchase a new ship worth Ksh3.5 billion ($34.6 million) for combating illegal activities including fishing in its territorial waters in the Indian Ocean.
According to fisheries CS Willy Bett, the patrol vessel had ordered from Pakistan and is due to arrive in the country in the coming days.
“The government is determined to root out illegal trawler fishing to prevent foreigners from plundering our marine fishery resources,”CS Bett added.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Kenya has the potential to produce more than 174,000 metric tonnes of fish annually once illegal menace on the Kenya territorial waters is curbed.
