PRIOR INTREP IN SUMMARY
- Credible information received in Wajir on 22/1/ 2018, showed that an estimated 40 heavily armed militants were spotted making their way on foot towards the general area of Likoley from Gedo region of Somalia at 2300hrs EAT.
- The militants are armed with machine guns, assault rifles, and RPG’s. Our assets further report that this group is under the command of a man named Abdirahman Filow.
- The group believed to be planning to conduct attacks targeting Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) mobile patrols along that part of the border (Wajir and Mandera).
- Police and army camps located in this general area are also possible targets.
Kenya security forces have recovered nine additional bodies of Al-Shabaab fighters killed in last week’s botched attack on a Special Forces camp in Kutulo, Wajir.
A group of Al-Shabaab terrorists tried to breach in the camp, but joint security forces comprising of AP and KDF-army who had prior intelligence of a possible attack, engaged them in a gun fight, forcing them to retreat into a nearby thicket.
According to local police commander Stephen Ngetich, a patrol team has so far recovered 12 bodies of the Islamist Al-Shabaab terrorists in a thicket, near the Kenya-Somalia border.
The attackers had tried to attack the Special Forces camp at around 8pm –last week Thursday, leading to a gun battle that lasted for two hours and ended with the assailants retreating.
The Special Forces is a combination of elite officers drawn from the Administration Police, mainly the Rapid Deployment Unit and the Rural border Patrol unit.
