The Kenya Defence Forces consist of Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force. Operating in an open manner, being accountable and responsible in their operations, the three branches work together in defending the country against external aggression and threats to the security of the people of Kenya.
It was established on 12th December 1964 as the maritime branch of the Kenya Defence Forces. It has its headquarters in Mombasa and other bases at Msambwebi, Kilifi, Shimoni, Malindi and Manda. Their base at Mtongwe is the oldest establishment and their logistics base.
Tasked with the responsibility to ensure that Kenyan waters are safe from piracy, sea-borne aggression and any other contraband issues, Kenya Navy has evolved into various departments which help facilitate its operations.
The Clearance Dividing Unit (CDU) of the Kenya Navy is an important component of the forces naval branch.
Established in 1978, this branch was established to support the Navy fleet in ships husbandry.

Clearance Dividing Unit (CDU) is comprised of naval forces who are responsible for deep sea diving, parachute dropping, explosive disposal, lifesaving and others as called for from time to time.
It is the intense physical and warfare training, courage, and bravery in their operations that this group of men evolved from Ships Diving Section to now Clearance Diving Unit (CDU).
This department of the Kenya Navy is responsible for beach survey, conduct parachute droppings, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and conduct underwater inspection.
For one to join the Clearance Diving Unit (CDU), volunteers from Kenya Navy go through endurance tests and training to ensure they are fit for the job.
