He is the Head of State, the President of Kenya, the head of Government and also serves as the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He took office as the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces on 9th April 2013 succeeding his predecessor and former president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki.
The Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces exercises the supreme military operations and commands of the Kenyan military, with an office at the State House.
Constitutionally, the President takes up this position and also serves as the chairperson of the National Security Council.

He has the final say on any military decision to be made though there are advisers to whom he will seek advice from time to time.
The Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces is also responsible for appointing the Chief of the Defence Forces as witnessed during the appointment of General Samson Mwathethe. An officer from one of the three branches of the Armed Forces is usually appointed by the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces to head this position.
He is also the man in charge of setting security standards in the country at the most supreme level, ensuring that commands are trickled down to the officers once he instructs his adviser, the Chief of the Defence Forces.
His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta is constitutionally expected to serve in this position for five years which also renewable.
