Kenya on August 26, 2019 formally joined the league of oil exporting nations as President Uhuru Kenyatta oversaw the inaugural shipment of the country’s first oil to the international market.
President Kenyatta described the oil export as a major milestone in the country’s transformation as he flagged off 200,000 barrels from the coastal city of Mombasa.
The first export was bought by Chemchina, a Chinese company, at the cost of Sh1.2 billion for export to Malaysia.
Kenya first attempted oil exploration in 1937 but it was not until 2012 that a commercially-viable deposit was located in the South Lokichar Basin in Turkana, in countries far north, by British firm Tullow and its joint venture partners.

The Tullow oil estimates the field holds 560 million barrels of oil.
According to President Kenyatta, the first oil pilot scheme will bring prosperity to the people of Turkana County as well as many local communities directly, benefitting from employment opportunities in production and logistics.
