To replace its ageing DHC-5 Buffalos fleet, improve logistical efficiency, and most importantly, boost the overall operational capabilities of its Air Force, the Kenya Army (KDF), has acquired 3 C-27J Spartan Tactical Military Transport Aircraft (MAT) from Italy.
The Kenya Defense Forces C-27J Spartan military aircraft were acquired for Sh20 billion (S$198 448 276) from Italy in the period between November 2017 and February 2018 and funded from loans advanced to Treasury by private banks.
The KDF C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft incorporates the same propulsion system and advanced avionics as the C-130J Hercules Transporter.
The KDF 3 C-27J Spartan Tactical Military Transport Aircraft roles will include troop and materials transport, medical evacuation, paratroops and cargo loads airdrops, search and rescue (SAR), logistic supply, humanitarian support, firefighting and support for civil emergency operations.
According to Leonardo Company, the KDF C-27J Spartan Tactical Military Transport Aircraft two AE2100-D2/D2A engines are rated at 4,637 SHP each. To increase safety and reliability, the avionics architecture is fully redundant and guarantees excellent performance and low pilot workload in whatever environmental condition and all operational theaters. Optional systems include air-to-air refueling, self-protection and head-up displays
