Profiling of hundreds of Kenyans and Somali’s living in East Africa and in the Western countries suspected of funding and supporting terror, disruption of communication between terror cells, and consistent monitoring of terror cells across East Africa and globally is expensive, very complex, and indeed unique.
Western Intelligence Services have failed to stop Somali-born residents living there from sending money to Somalia for terror operations.
Foreign jihadists particularly British, American, Swiss, Netherlands, Canada, Yemeni, Pakistani’s and Afghanistan flock Somalia to conduct militant operations and plan terror attacks in the East African region.
The Republic of Kenya has been able to disrupt more than 26 terror attacks targeting soft targets, particularly civilian and government offices in the capital Nairobi.
These counter terrorism operations are not led by foreigners rather Kenyan security intelligence services.
Counter-Terrorism-Unit officers have a long list of Kenyans actively involved in terror activities in neighboring Somalia. The officers are constantly monitoring the movement and communication of these suspects.
Foreign jihdists on the Al-Shabaab ranks have not been spared the Kenyan surveillance operations. Their use of encrypted communication systems, SatPhones, and other unique forms of espionage-related communication systems have been cracked by the Kenyans.
This proactive approach to terrorists and their activities is indeed unique and a critical milestone in combating global terrorism.
Kenya operations are a model most Western counter-terrorism agencies will study and adopt.
