Kenyan Army Rangers Killed 13 Al-Shabaab Militants outside Ras-Kamboni after a botched Ambush
On Sunday 4th of September 2016, the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Al-Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) movement militants ambushed a Kenya Defense Forces Rangers (KDF-AMISOM Contingent) convoy on regular patrol along the perimeter border fence in an area between Ras-Kamboni and Kulbiyoow in Somalia’s Juba region, near the Kenyan border but suffered many causalities.
In the botched ambush Al-Shabaab fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire at armored personnel carriers (APC) and tactical vehicles carrying 9 Rangers from the KDF. The team in one of the tactical vehicles (last in the convoy) decided to counter the marauding terrorists estimated to be approximately 40 while the other vehicles provided cover.
A Lone KDF Ranger took a tactical position after disengaging from the tactical vehicle and engaged the militants by identifying their positions and firing burst of accurate machine gunfire at each position. He successfully disrupted the enemy gunners forcing them to scamper for safety allowing him to fire at the exposed targets killing approximately 13 of them.
The militants abandoned their positions and ran away. The lone gunner sustained a gunshot wound on his leg. Military doctors say they are minor injuries and the Ranger is safe.
No army Ranger was killed in the incident/contact with the enemy. The KDF Rangers recovered 3 RPG’s, a machine gun, and 4 AK-47 assault rifles. All vehicles successfully left the area and safely reached their FOB.
