The Kenya army (KDF) backed by a unit from the General Service Unit, and anti-narcotics/drugs, and arms unit cordoned of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and conducted an operation.
The units sealed off the port and conducted a searches on ships docked at berth 13 suspected to be used for smuggling drugs and arms shortly after they berthed at 2100hrs Thursday.
Intelligence reports show that the intelligence service provided information about a ship often used to ship arms, ammunition, and drugs. The operation was planned ahead of docking of the vessel, and a car carrier, arrived at Berth Number 13.
Intelligence also shows that the port of Mombasa is used as the transit point for hard drugs and ammunition and illegal ivory trade by global kingpins.
Nearly 60% of drug money, arms, and ammunition traded in Mombasa fund conflicts and terrorism in East Africa.
Kenya’s external and internal intelligence divisions have increased their capability to detect and preempt such threats.
