KDF Operational Update in Afmadow, March 17, 2016
An update by Kenya’s Ministry of Defence; Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers operating under the banner of AMISOM thwarted a major planned attack by Al-Shabaab terrorists near AMISOM and Somali National Army (SNA) camps in Afmadow, lower Jubba region.
Al-Shabaab fighters had approached the camps at night with an intention to attack and cut off SNA from the AMISOM’s KDF camp.
KDF soldiers on patrols (scouts) identified the militants and responding with gunfire.
Al-Shabaab fighters attempted to fight them back but were swiftly repulsed by KDF soldiers on patrol and the ones on the camp reinforcing the battle.
Following the clash, 19 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed , one technical vehicle was destroyed .
Some arms and ammunition including 10 AK 47 rifles and 3 rocket propelled grenades were recovered.
KDF has called on local community to collaborate with security forces, urging them to report individuals spotted with gun wounds, seeking medication, saying several militants managed to flee.
KDF troops have been vigilant while on their mission in Somalia and following the El-Adde attack on ther base on January 15.
