On 10th April 2017, at around 0600hrs, Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) which is operating under the mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) using its surveillance assets identified an Al-Shabaab camp, about 4 kilometers of West Catamaa and approximately 104 kilometers to the border town of Elwak, Gedo region.
KDF-AMISOM detachment from a nearby post raided the terrorists' camp and engaged Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) fighters also known as Al-Shabaab in artillery and mortar fire.
Al-Shabaab camp was successfully destroyed and more than 15 terrorists killed. Several others terrorist fighters escaped with injuries and one technical destroyed (Al-Shabaab vehicle mounted with a gun). Assortment of weapons also recovered and others destroyed.
Kenya Defense Forces operation comes two days after the troops conducted another operation where they killed Al-Shabaab commander Bashe Nure Hassan and some of his unit fighters in the town of Kuday.
KDF in a statement sent to the newsroom confirming the raid, reiterated that their operations against the Islamist terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda will continue until all the terrorists are eliminated to ensure locals continues to enjoy peace and security
