Jubbaland state forces have launched a major offensive against al Shabaab bases in Lower Shabelle. The state troops engaged in a heavy gunfight with the militants in Wirkoy village, located near the southern port city of Kismayo, the interim seat of Jubbaland.
Five al Shabaab were killed in the gunfight that lasted several hours, and those that escape were seen retreating away from the battleground. Tensions are reported to be high in the area as the troops regroup and receive reinforcement to ensure that the al Shabaab militants are defeated, and area liberated from the jihadists.
Kismayo was liberated by Kenya Defense Forces from the al shabaab seeing as it was a strategic location to facilitate illegal charcoal export that was used to funnel funds for the terror organisation affiliated to al Qaeda.
