Jubaland State forces reported to have arrested an alleged mastermind of a deadly terrorist attack on a hotel in the southern port city of Kismayo last month.
Kismayo in Kismayo reported that a suspect believed to have a hand in last month’s attack had been apprehended by the state security personnel in the city following an operation.
Initial investigations reveal that the car used for the As-asey Hotel attack was prepared inside Kismayo town and about 500km south of Mogadishu.
On the night of 12th July 2019 a suicide car bomb destroyed the entrance gate at the Hotel, allowing at least four gunmen to enter the property. The siege continued for several hours.
At least 26 people, among them a prominent Somali Canadian social media activist, Hodan Nalayeh, her husband, several tribal leaders, and a regional presidential aspirant were killed in the fatal raid.
The Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the Al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Shabaab claimed that the attack was targeted on Jubaland ministers, federal and regional lawmakers and candidates staying at the hotel.
Al-Shabaab continues to stage targeted attacks on senior government officials as well as government military bases, a worrying trend exhibiting group’s capability of staging attacks even on highly fortified areas.
