OSINT SUMMARY
28th December 2015, military reports coming in indicate that Iraqi forces have recaptured the former government compound in central Ramadi.
According to Iraqi’s counter-terrorism spokesman, the forces have battled Daesh in their last stronghold in the western city.
“The complex is under our complete control, there is no presence whatsoever of Daesh fighters in the complex,” Sabah al-Numan was quoted on Sunday
The spokesman added that the entire perimeter must first be cleared of booby traps and mines before forces could move in.“The operation is almost wrapped up. Our forces will enter in the coming hours.”
Sabah al-Numan said that by recapturing the complex mean that Daesh have been defeated in Ramadi and next step by the forces is to clear any hideouts that may exist on the city.
The military operation saw dozens of Daesh killed in the air strikes on the government compound, Numan added.
The operation that began five days ago on Sunday, saw Iraqi army troops secure eight districts of Ramadi, including al-Baker, Mo’allemin, al-Andalus and Hoz.
Iraqi forces have made huge gains in recent operations against Daesh terrorists in the embattled province of Anbar as they continue clean-up operations against Takfiri militants across the country.
Retaking the city Ramadi, which fell to the militants in May 2015, would be one of the most significant victories for Iraqi’s security forces since the Takfiris purged across a third of the country.
