Intelligence sources have said that there are insignificant traces of the Somalia based Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen in the Southern and central parts of Somalia, after they were pushed by the AMISOM troops far into the North.
The operation which drove the group out of the major bases they controlled to stage attacks in the struggling East African nation and the neighbouring countries including Kenya has also killed many of the Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen fighters.
The group can no longer carry out well co-ordinated attacks, owing to their small numbers and this has forced them to resort to the infamous hit and run and guerrilla attacks, characteristic of the recent attack on the AMISOM troops on Monday 11th May 2015.
Guerilla attacks are distinguished to a small, violent force competing against a larger, more co-ordinated one.
In this regard, OSINT sources have hinted that the AMISOM troop’s advantage will lie on the population support and mastery of the terrain of Somalia to continually disintegrate the attacks.
Recruitment in the al shabaab seems to have hit a snurl since the Kenyan military took a firm grip on its borders, ensuring that no Kenyan left the country to join any terrorist group including Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen and the Islamic State. Other nations in the East African region especially Tanzania have also joined the effort to totally thwart operations of the Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen.
A big number of the already HSM recruits have surrendered to the Kenyan authorities following the Kenyan government’s amnesty period last month.
