Heavily armed members of the Harakat Al Alshabab Al Mujahideen ambushed two African Union bases in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The Monday night attack of 14th September 2015 occurred at Towfiq intersection and the former pasta factory. The heavy exchange between the militants and troops at the bases witnessed use of both heavy and light weapons and rocket propel grenades.
The militants were however pushed back on the troops at the base getting reinforcement from their counterparts in AMISOM. Dozens of militants were confirmed dead in the exchange.
Towfiq is a District in the north-central Mudug region of Somalia lying beyond the Golol valley, 225 km northeast of the provincial capital ofGalkayo.
Mogadishu has known peace for some time, with AMISOM troops having driven out the militants from all of their bases from the region. However recent attempts on the AU bases send a warning that the militants wish to take over control of the region.
