Outgoing Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan in a phone call to former military leader and Nigeria’s president elect, Muhammadu Buhari conceded defeat in the hotly contested Nigerian general election.
It was further echoed in a written statement to the people of Nigeria; “I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you that I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure”.
This is not the first time that Buhari is in power as he had a short stunt after a coup between 1983 and 1985. He ruled Nigeria for 20 months that are remembered as ‘war on indiscipline’ days.
72-year-old Buhari had his campaign focused on security and eradication of corruption in Nigeria. His entry into government comes with a lot high expectation with the deadly battle against the Islamic outfit Boko Haram.
The Nigerian citizens hope that Buhari with his military experience and his promise to end the insurgency that he makes true his word and led the country to healing.
Jonathan also called for calm in the country after violence broke in Rivers state and pleaded with his supporters to accept the outcome and maintain the peace. He said that the unity and stability and progress of the country were much more important than any single individual and nobody’s ambition was worth the blood of any Nigerian.
