16th February 2016: European Union Foreign Ministers threaten to increase the economic sanction on Burundi which has been in a political turmoil since April 2015.
The ministers said this at a meeting in Brussels citing the sanctions will affect individual who have contributed to the country’s violence and those impeding the peace process and efforts to seek a political solution for Burundi.
This will follow travel bans and asset freezes on for officials close to the president last year but also said they wouldn’t suspend the humanitarian aid to Burundi as it would cause a dire crisis for the displaced Burundians.
Burundi has experienced political unrest since the April 2015 mainly due to President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third-term bid with domestic solution seeking yielding no results. Burundi declined an African Union Peacekeeping mission deployment and deadlocking all international community efforts to broker peace and political solution.
