Fidel Castro, Cuba’s former president and leader of the Communist Revolution has died aged 90.
According to his brother, President Raul Castro, the commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (03:29 GMT Saturday).
Fidel Castro had ruled Cuba as one-party state for almost 50 years. His brother took over the presidency in 2008.
President Castro told the nation in an unexpected late night broadcast on state-run television that Fidel Castro had died and would be cremated on Saturday.
Fidel Castro who had survived many assassination plots is known as the longest serving non-royal leader of the 20th Century.
In 2006, Castro had temporarily handed over the presidency to his brother following an acute intestinal ailment.
Two years later, Raul Castro officially became president of Cuba.
