The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national army (FARDC) announced that they arrested the leader of the Mai-Mai Kyandenga, Jean-Baptiste Kupaku aka Kyandenga.
According to the statement issued by the FARDC, it revealed that Jean-Baptiste Kupaku was arrested last week in Butembo town along with his bodyguards. According to intelligence, Kyandenga was planning attacks in Butembo town and is believed to have masterminded attacks in the west of Oicha and parts of the neighboring province of Ituri.
Intelligence out of North Kivu And Ituri indicates that Kupaku has been the righthand for the Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) since he pledged allegiance to the rebel group. He is accused of having carried out an attacks on the Kangbayi central prison in October 2020 leading to the escape of hundreds of inmates.
