China has commenced the construction of logistical facilities in Djibouti aimed at supporting its troops.
Djibouti borders Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. Intelligence reports China seek a greater role on regional peace and stability through the base.
Djibouti also is the home to one of United States largest foreign onshore aerial vehicles and counter-terrorism drone program — Camp Lemonnier.
Camp Lemonnier is a United States Naval Expeditionary Base, and the only permanent military base in Africa.
According to Wu Qian, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense , China reached a deal to set up a naval base in Djibouti to facilitate its troops in carrying out international peacekeeping operations and in aiding them perform their humanitarian rescues.
China has built navy supply bases overseas for the anti-piracy fight mainly in East Africa.
