Maiduguri-Nigeria, March 30, 2016: Following a 10-day siege on Alargano, the Nigerian troops were able to capture Boko Haram’s spiritual headquarters according to head of counter-insurgency operations in the North-East Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor.
The offensive was conducted by troops of 3 and 7 Division with aerial support from the Nigerian Air Force. The offensive is said to have been marred by challenges like IEDs and landmines planted by the Boko Haram terrorists.
Some of the cleared areas include Yajiwa, Joba, Mosa, Ariwuzumari, Missene Sansan and Kagalmari villages, all at the fringes of the forest with heavy casualties on the militants.
The capture of the militants’ spiritual headquarters is very monumental to the defeat of the militants who have lost several hundred fighters in the past month and a huge number of sympathizers and enthusiasts who are said to have surrendered to the troops due to harsh living conditions characterized by starvation and psychological trauma.
The herein mentioned operation was mounted in conjunction with Cameroonian forces fighting under the Multi-national Joint Task Force.
