Puntland forces repelled an overnight attack at their outpost near Qandala, Bari region by pro-ISIS Jihadists. The midnight raid is said to have sparked fierce gunfight between the ISIS militants and Puntland Darwish troops lasting several hours and killing one soldier.
According to area Bari rare force commander, the terrorists attacked the outpost from three different locations in a village called Anjel near the port city of Qandala. The commander further said that at least a dozen of the militants were killed in the gunfire that lasted close to five hours before they retreated and fled. This is the second attempt by the militants in to attack the Puntland forces in a short span of time and comes just weeks after the ISIS-affiliated militants released a video showing their capabilities in the northern part of Somalia.
The Islamic State in Somalia officially split from al-Qaeda affiliated faction in October 2015 forming the ISIS branch in Somalia under the leadership of former al Shabaab commander Abdulkadir Mumin.
