At least six people were killed in three different villages in Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The incidents occurred over the weekend in the Ndjala, Jili, and Logari villages in the north-eastern gold-rich Ituri province.
Preliminary intelligence revealed that the militants attacked the villages at night, burning down buildings and killing people among them two women. The villagers were forced to flee the violence and are yet to return in what is becoming the mode of attack by the various violent outfits in the province.
Most of the attacks in the region are blamed on the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), and Cooperative for Development of Congo (CODECO) insurgent groups.
CODECO which has been conducting attacks in Ituri claims to defend the interests and lands of the Lendu community typically made up of many farmers. The majority of the victims are members of the Hema community who are herders and traders.
