A Suicide Vehicle Borne Explosive Device (SVBIED) detonated outside a Kenya Defence Forces Forward Operating Base (FOB) outside the frontier town of Kolbiyow on January 27th 2017. The driver of the vehicle was a Kenyan man identified as Anwar Yogan Mwok.
Mwok has been under surveillance of the National Intelligence Agency (NIS) alongside two other mid-level leaders of the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Al-Shabaab Mujahideen Movement (HSM). Ramadhan Kungwa and Eric Achayo Ogada joined the Somali terror group alongside Yogan Mwok.
Mwok, a fairly wealthy Kenyan left the country for Somalia after being radicalized. He was born in 1981 in Siaya, a region in Nyanza prefecture of Kenya. He converted to Islam and loved playing football in Nairobi’s Umoja area. Mwok took up preaching at Musa and Sakina Mosques in Mombasa.
Mwok also played a key role in recruiting and radicalizing Kenyan youths, particularly those from Umoja and Majengo areas of the capital Nairobi.
