An Afghanistan Jihadist fighting alongside Al-Qaeda linked Al Shabaab is among the 16 terror militants that were killed in a joint military operation carried out near Marka town, about 91 kilometers southwest of the Somalia capital, Mogadishu.
A Somali military source confirmed of joint operation with AMISOM troops saying it was conducted in Jilib, an Al-Shabaab held town and headquarters, near Marka town, leaving 16 militants, including an Afghan jihadist identified as Nasir Al-Jabiri dead.
The source further noted that the operation was intelligence led and it was conducted as planned. There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabaab over the military claims.
Al-Shabaab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than 10 years.
A 22,000-strong African Union force is in the country to help the Somalia government forces fight the Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
