The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) as called on troops contributing countries to employ creativity in dealing with the ever-evolving threat of al Shabaab. The call was made by Nakibus Lakara, deputy force commander in charge of operations and plans (CONOP) who has been visiting military bases in Somalia on assessment mission.
The CONOP which aims to provide a structure for AMISOM operations from 2018-2021, marks the final phase of the AU Mission’s transition and its eventual exit from Somalia.
The CONOP urged AMISOM troops to enhance their efforts in fighting al Shabaab despite the various challenges and hurdles presented the imminent exit and the question of SNA preparedness in taking over the security of the Horn of Africa country.
In the past weeks, al Shabaab has exhibited a rejuvenated and apparent change of MO in their attacks becoming more daring. The terror organization has morphed to attack more fortified targets like the EU and US forces and as such a need to revitalize the efforts and tactics in fighting the threat.
It is paramount to note that with the AMISOM exit nearing, the SNA is seeming behind schedule in showing their capability to take over the comprehensive security a fact that is worrisome and require that AU troops annihilate al Shabaab to, destroy their networks and enhance public participation in the security process before the projected exit.
