The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has called on government of Ghana and the Ghana Police Administration to deploy a Formed Police Unit (FPU) contingent to Somalia to advance peace and security efforts in the war-torn country.
AMISOM’s acting Police Commissioner Mrs. Christine Alalo made the appeal when she interacted with journalists from Ghana and Nigeria on a field visit to Somalia after receiving the invitation from AMISOM.
Ghana currently has a contingent of 37 Individual Police Officers (IPOs) serving with AMISOM but has no FPU contingent in Somalia.
According to Mrs. Alalo, AMISOM Police is currently made up of three Formed Police Units (FPU) deployed from Uganda, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
Mrs. Alalo lauded of the crucial roles played by FPU in ensuring improved security in the liberated areas of Somalia previously occupied by members of Al-Shabaab and other insurgent groups.
She noted that AMISOM has 718 police personnel and urgently needed 322 more to reach its 1,040 target.
