Latest military reports from Somalia indicate that Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Somali military base in located on the outskirts of Hudur district.
Hudur is a town in the south Western Bakool region of Somalia and serves as the province’s capital and is the center of the Hudur District. Al-Shabaab has interests in the region due to its economic lifeline to the extremists group.
Reports from military assets from the town indicate that the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab militants staged an ambush attack on the military base manned and operated by Somali forces.
Heavy fighting erupted resulting to unconfirmed number of casualties and injuries from both sides.
Reports from the town also say that the allied forces began security operations in the area to normalize the situation.
Al-Shabaab’s Strengthening Capabilities
It is worth noting that the military capabilities of the Al-Shabaab have taken an upward hike in the past few years that is openly manifested in the number of violent attacks carried out by the extremist group on regular basis. The high-level attacks carried out by Al-Shabaab highlights the military capabilities and strengths of the faction.
Witnessing the augmenting influence and increased military capabilities of Al-Shabaab in Somalia, there is a dire need for concerted efforts on part of international communities to fight back the heinous acts of extremism and prevent the Al-Qaeda branch from proliferating its influence within the region.
