Military reports from Somalia indicate that dozens of Al-Shabaab were on Sunday, 6th September 2020 captured while in a strategic town was recaptured in latest counterterrorism operations in southern Somalia.
The US-trained elite forces raided Al-Shabaab makeshift camp in Leego town, approximately 120 kilometers south of the capital Mogadishu in a coordinated operation that targeted militants. According to the state military radio, dozens of militants were captured during the operation and are now under the custody of the Danab forces.
US Africa Command forces have been training the SNA special forces (Danab) in an effort that they will be ready to take up the security of their country ahead of the planned exit of the African Union Mission (AMISOM) troops in Somalia. The African Union Mission troops are scheduled to exit from Somalia in 2021, after which they will hand over to the SNA troops.
Counterterrorism operations have continued to mount pressure on the Al-Qaeda Aligned Al-Shabaab. Dozens of Al-Shabaab militants have either been killed or captured across Somalia in ground combats and in the supported aerial bombardments by the US Africa Command.
In Jubaland, SNA troops in a separate operation recaptured a strategic town located about 60 kilometers west of Kismayo on Saturday, 5th September 2020 yet another significant blow against the Somalia-based Islamist militants, who have been wreaking havoc in the Horn of Africa country for over a decade
According Somali military sources and reported by the state media, the government troops liberated Janay Abdalle town in Jubaland which was taken by Al-Shabaab militants for almost two years. In well-coordinated intelligence led operations, the troops are carrying out operations across the country in a bid to flash out the Al-Shabaab militants and liberate more areas, town and regions under the control of Al-Shabaab, especially in rural regions of southern and central Somalia.
