Al Shabaab fighters have reportedly killed a foreign fighter from Egypt believed to have defected from the group and joined ISIS in the latest wave of operations by the group targeting its foreign fighters. The Egyptian jihadi identified as Abu Anas Al-Misri was shot dead in a mosque in the southern town of Jilib. He refused to surrender and pulled a hand grenade as his compatriots attempted to arrest for being ‘anti-al-Shabaab’
There has been reported an upsurge of rivalry and war between members of al Shabaab and Abnaa Ul-Calipha the official ISIS affiliate in Somalia especially in the southern towns which happen to al Shabaab’s strongholds. The two terror organizations have been slowly competing for territory as the ISIS affiliate attempt to make headway in the south of the country.
According to Strategic Intelligence (S.I) analysts, Abnaa Ul-Calipha has been creating cells in the south and luring defectors from al Shabaab especially foreign fighters who have been disgruntled by the unfair treatment in the al Shabaab camps. The recent wave of persecutions of foreign fighters by al Shabaab can be linked to the alleged spread of ISIS in the southern parts of the country.
