Al Shabaab militants attacked a military base in Puntland’s Bari region engaging in heavy gunfire. The jihadists attacked the militant base at the daybreak as is their mode of operation.
Al Shabaab has since taken responsibility for the early morning attack that killed at least two soldiers and injuring several others. Puntland officials maintain that while the onslaught is still ongoing, at least a dozen al Shabaab militants have been killed and the remaining fighters have been significantly been weakened.
Al Shabaab in Puntland has been rather docile as compared to those encampments located in the central and south of Somalia. The attack comes as the US steps up its airstrikes against the al-Qaeda affiliate in the vicinity of its headquarters in Jilib.
