Event:
5th July 2015, al-Qaeda operational leader, Ali Ag Wadossene, killed during an operation led by French troops in northeastern town of Kidal while two other terrorists are captured, leading to a great blow to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
Scenario analysis:
The killed al-Qaeda leader had previously been released from prison in exchange for a French hostage who had been kidnapped by the militia group.
It is no secret that France’s Operation Barkhane troops did not stop hunting down the terrorist and eventually launched an assault on him.
The assault was in retaliation of the killing of six peacekeepers from Bukina Fase who were killed in a terrorist raid claimed by the AQIM.
Summary:
France has maintained troops in Mali since 2013 when they invaded the West African nation to flush out AQIM militants.
The militia group has however been fast expanding within the region with an intention to gain control of major government institutions and entities.
The recent death of the commander has greatly shaken the AQIM. However this is a positive move for the French troops who have indicated their might against these militants.
This is the second major al-Qaeda commander killed by the troops, after Amada Ag Hama was killed in May.
