All five bodyguards belonging to Mungiki’s Maina Njenga were killed by bullets from a Mungiki hit squad in Nyahururu.
A small salon vehicle overtook Maina Njenga’s convoy of two vehicles at Suera area and opened fire on the vehicles killing four bodygaurds of the Mungiki leader.
Maina Njenga’s lover also survived the assassination but sustained serious bullet wounds.
Njenga’s role in Mungiki affairs is still relevant and he commands a lot of respect from the organizations leadership.
However the former leader of the outlawed sect nolonger claims to be the sects leader and is currently embroiled in a land tussle between members of the sect and the propriety of a piece of land in Kitengela area south of Nairobi.
The assassination attempt on Maina Njenga indicates the high possibility of the former leader being of control of alot of Mungiki operations including their money related issues.
Other factors that could call for his killing by Mungiki could be interests in leadership where factions of the outlawed criminal gang feel he is controlling the gang whereas he is nolonger the leader.
