A military court in DR Congo sentenced two soldiers to life in prison.
The soldiers were convicted for mass rape in 2012, military intelligence sources report.
Democratic Republic of Congo intelligence service found out 97 women and 33 girls, some as young as six, were raped in the eastern town of Minova by government soldiers.
The rape happened over a period of over two days as thousands of civilians fled fighting between Congo’s ill-disciplined army and the M23 rebel group.
Lawyer Sabra Mpoy for the defense reports that one soldiers was convicted of rape and another of murder. Both soldiers were dismissed from service in the DR Congo army.
The court sentenced 24 other soldiers to between 10 and 20 years in prison for looting and disobeying orders. The soldiers, according to military intelligence officials in DRC disobeyed orders not to leave their camp near Minova during the incident in November 2012.
The same court acquitted 13 senior officers for lack of evidence.
