Islamic State-MOZ has claimed the first attack in Nampula Province as the group continues to stretch its attacks across more districts. The attacks occurred in Mithope village in Memba where at least a dozen militants attacked and looted before retreating.
Preliminary intelligence indicates that the armed men attacked the houses and took food, medicine, and other supplies after which they took a boat to cross the Lurio River. The militants also kidnaped a few people to help with the carrying of the loot.
It appears that IS-MOZ is working overtime to rebrand as an independent Mozambique province since it has been part of the Central African province. It has been seeking to claim headlines and has received praises from ISIS-Central. It is especially observed in the brutal pictures of attacks in the past few weeks which have heightened the threat by the group and continue to spread fear not only in Cabo Delgado but also in neighboring provinces.
In the latest edition of al-Naba ISIS praised its fighters in Africa and called Muslims for hijra to the continent. In 2022 the group has conducted almost half of all its claimed attacks in the seven official wilayât/provinces based in Africa.
